Executive Director Marla Spindel Quoted in DC City Paper Article on Resignation of CFSA Director Matthews
“DC KinCare Alliance Director Marla Spindel says the way CFSA has conducted its kinship care model is problematic.”
DC KinCare Alliance seeks to achieve a future where all DC children live in safe and stable homes.
We work to support caregivers (usually grandparents and other relatives) who raise DC’s most vulnerable and at-risk children when their parents are not able to care for them.
Parents may have died, be incarcerated or homeless, have a substance use or mental health disorder, abuse or neglect their children, have been detained or deported, or are sick from COVID-19.
We respect and empower relatives to care for at-risk DC children by providing:
Meet Brenda and Her 8-Month-Old Granddaughter Kayla
Brenda began caring for her grandbaby Kayla when Kayla’s mother was hospitalized from a drug overdose. Kayla’s father is incarcerated for trying to kill Kayla’s mother. Brenda struggled to feed, clothe, and get diapers for Kayla. Even worse, once COVID hit, Brenda lost her minimum wage job and got behind paying her utilities and rent. She was terrified she would become homeless.

Ropes & Gray LLP and DC KinCare Alliance have filed two additional federal lawsuits against the District of Columbia and the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) for violating the rights of multiple low-income D.C. children and their relative caregivers under federal and D.C. laws.
The National Grandfamilies and Kinship Support Network has designated DC KinCare Alliance an Exemplary Kinship Program!
Any amount is gratefully accepted and will be applied directly to help those most in need.
DC KinCare Alliance works to support relative caregivers who raise DC’s most vulnerable and at-risk children whose parents are not able to care for them for reasons including: death, incarceration, homelessness, substance use or mental health disorders, abuse or neglect, detainment or deportation. We empower relatives to care for these children by providing legal representation, education, and advocacy for the whole family.
